Industry 4.0 Scorecard of Turkish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises

The industry is revolutionizing into a new era with the total integration of all elements of the production through digitalization, and establishing communication between each other. The structure of business processes is changing with the newly introduced, radical and highly value adding technological drivers, such as internet of things, cloud computing, autonomous robots, augmented reality, cyber security system, etc. Companies are facing with strong pressure to increase their productivity by adopting smart manufacturing techniques and realizing smart factories.

Industry 4.0 is a concept which consists of the intelligent networking of machines and processes with the help of information technologies and big data. It is the adoption of several technologies such as sensor systems, automation,  predictive/pre-emptive maintenance, 3D printing, smart warehouses, etc. to company processes. Like the preceding three industrial revolutions – 1.0 steam power, 2.0 mass production/electricity, 3.0 digital age – Industry 4.0 will also transform local and global economies and create a new future for us all.

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) have 99.8% enterprise share of Turkey, and consequently have obvious contribution not only to the local economy but also to the global competition strength of the country. In that sense, catching up the fourth industrial revolution has to be the prior agenda of the SMEs.

The objective of this seminar is to enable participants to understand the Industry 4.0 ecosystem and take a look at the awareness and readiness level of Turkish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) for this transformation. Also, a comparison study of the most industrialized cities in Turkey (İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir and Bursa) from the perspective of Industry 4.0 will be presented.
